4-year-old sophomore celebrates his birthday on leap year

Sophomore Michael English finds himself walking the halls of high school with hundreds of teenagers on his fourth birthday. Sixteen years ago he was born on a leap year.

“It only happens every four years, so I stand out when I tell people. I like it,” English said.

It is rare to see “leapers” while wandering about. When people first hear of a 4-year-old sophomore, they automatically think that the sophomore has skipped a lot of grades.

Obviously, Pattonville doesn’t have a preschooler taking courses at the high school. English turns 16 today and intends to celebrate by taking his driver’s license test in the next few days.

“I’ve never ran into a situation where the people at the bureau ask me how old I was,” English said.

On normal years, English says he and his family recognize his birthday on February 28th.

“I treat it just like any other birthday,” claims English.

Michael English is celebrating his 4th birthday on February 29, 2012. He was born on leap day in 1996.
