As we walks into school, his palms start to sweat. His stomach starts to hurt. He walks straight to the locker room without stopping at his school locker. He looks at the list and he sees his name next to “Players that should report to practice”. He takes a sigh of relief and heads to his classes knowing that he just made his high school baseball team.

Baseball at Pattonville High School has always been a strong sport for the school. Usually every program – freshmen, JV and varsity –  has a good record at the end of the season, but before all the games and the practices, there are tryouts.

For many of the freshmen, it is their first time trying out for a team. Many of the players haven’t played together either.

“When I try out this year for baseball I will be confident that I am going to make the team, but it is my first time trying out for a baseball team,” freshman Kyle Hanford said.

This week, freshman coach Douglas McGhee made his final cut for Pattonville’s baseball team. The players who made the team can take a short sigh of relief before they have to “meet Jesus”, a drill where players have to run up the hill to Grace Church.

Freshman Matt Morlan said the reason he tried out for the team is because he enjoys playing the sport.

“All my friends are on the team, so I feel great about making the team with them,” he said. “I hope I get plenty of playing time.”

This was Morlan’s first time trying out out for a baseball team as well.

After scrimmaging the JV team on Saturday the team is ready for the season to start.
