Cardinals benchThe St. Louis Cardinals 2016 season is right around the corner as pitchers and catchers are reporting to Jupiter, Florida, to get ready for Spring Training.

The Cards are coming off a 100-win season and a third straight Central Division title. The season as a whole was a success even with injuries to Adam Wainwright and many of their top players. Maybe the biggest disappointment to the season was when the St. Louis and Chicago faced off in the NLDS. It was the first time ever that the Cardinals and Cubs played each other in the postseason. The season came to an abrupt end when the Cardinals hit a brick wall, losing in 4 games. The Cubs thoroughly outplayed the Cards in Games 2-4 and ended their 4-year streak of going to the NLCS.

Students at Pattonville are excited about the new season, which also means a start to spring sports at the high school

“I’m looking forward to seeing Yadi back behind the plate and healthy again,” Danny Johnson said. “I’m also excited to see Wainwright coming off his injury but also to see Alex Rodriguez hobble around the bases another year for the Yankees.”

Another Pattonville baseball player, senior Matt Ridings, is also looking forward to the Cardinals but baseball season as a whole.

“I can’t wait to go to a couple games this summer and I’m just looking forward to baseball being back.”

University of Central Missouri baseball commit Micah Evans wanted to chime in as well and make a bold prediction for the World Series.

“I’m hoping to see the Red Sox win the World Series,” Evans said. “I want to see them in the playoffs and beat the Cubs in the World Series.”

Baseball season is always one of the most anticipated sporting seasons in America and it’s going to be interesting as always to see who will lift the World Series trophy in October.

With not many changes to the overall roster, the Cardinals will look similar to their 100-win team of last season.

Other teams like the Red Sox, Cubs and Diamondbacks made big splashes in free agency this offseason to try and improve their teams.

Let’s hope the Cardinals can compete in the grueling NL Central and put another strong season together and win their NL best 12th Fall Classic.
