Chaminade defeated Pattonville 90-75 in the first round of the state tournament on March 8. The game was played at Lindenwood University.

The Pattonville varsity boys’ basketball team ended its season with a 90-75 Class 5 sectional loss to Chaminade at the Hyland Arena on the campus on Lindenwood University. The Pirates ended the season on March 8 with a record of 19-9.

“The season went great and we did a great job,” head coach Kelly Thames said. “The kids fought and we did something that hasn’t happened in about 32 years, so we did a great job.”

It was the first appearance in the sectional round in 32 years and the first Class 5 District championship since 1976.

Not only was Thames proud of the team but the boys were very proud of how the season went.

“This was a good season and we were very productive,” Derrick Boyce said. “We did a lot of good things, came in at the right times, it was fun.”

The Pirates had a tough game on Wednesday night, and Chaminade led 54-32 at halftime, but the Pirates cut that lead down to just 6 points late in the third quarter. Ultimately, it was the missed shots that cost them the win.

“We missed a lot of layups and free throws, and Chaminade shot about 70 percent from the 3-point line in the second quarter,” Thames said. “Overall, we fought hard.”

Although the boys are upset that their season is over, they were able to bring a district championship back to Pattonville.

“It was a big time accomplishment,” senior Marquis Hayes said. “It was something we haven’t done in a while so it was a big time thing before I left to get done.”

The team will be losing some big players next season such as seniors Richard Henderson, Destan Williams, and Marquis Hayes, but there will be many returning player who hope to continue having success in the program, and go farther in the state tournament next year.
