Remembering 7-Eleven: Store located on McKelvey closed Aug. 20

Knowing the end was coming did not make it any easier. A small sign was posted outside of the 7-Eleven on McKelvey Road that read “Store Closing on Aug. 20th” but students are now missing the convenience store that was just a 5-minute walk from the high school.

Students went into a state of mourning when they found out the store was bought out by Phillips 66.

Placed on the corner of McKelvey and Creve Coeur Mill Road, the store that never closed always had customers in it at all hours of the day and was a big part of why the store was so popular.

Raya Boyd, a frequent visitor of the 7-Eleven, is heartbroken about the departure of the store.

“Typically I went either before school or after practice and with the store not being there anymore means I won’t be able to buy last-minute snacks,” she said. “It’s a bit bittersweet being my senior year, and because we kinda grew up with that 7-Eleven. It’s like a piece of our childhood is being taken away.”

The 7-Eleven will be remembered by students because it was easily accessible after school in order to get snacks and its popular Slurpees. Those now looking for a slushie or bag of chips will have to venture further out to other convenience stores.

“We will now have to go to QuikTrip because it’s the next closest slushie destination,” Maya Furr said.

One of the perks of 7-Eleven that many students will remember is that the workers always greeted them with a smile and talked about the newest deal of the day.

Students are now being relocated to other locations, and forcibly moved farther away from the comforts of their homes, but Lexi Taylor said if she is just looking for a snack or a drink, there is another choice.

“Tony’s is right across the street from where 7-Eleven was,” Taylor said. “It’s just more expensive than 7-Eleven was so that is a con.”

The new Phillips 66 will replace the gasoline tanks that were taken out of 7-Eleven about a year ago and possibly have a fast food restaurant connected to it.
