Winter sports seasons delayed for some fall athletes

With most fall sports already coming to an end, athletes have turned their attention to  winter sports. But for some swimmers, cross country runners, soccer players, and football players, their seasons are still going strong.

With athletes having to think about just one sport at a time, and with wrestling and boys’ basketball tryouts starting on Oct. 30, many of the football players looking to try out for those sports won’t be able to just yet.

Boys’ varsity basketball head coach Kelly Thames likes to give football players some time before they jump back into another sport.

“They have a special tryout whenever their season is over with,” Thames said. “They get a couple of days off and then a tryout of their own. It’s like that with all sports, they get a special tryout.”

Andre Webb who plays for the varsity football team is glad that the football season is still going but is ready for basketball too.

“I’m ready for the season to start, and I hate the fact that I am going to miss tryouts because I love basketball,” Webb said. “I want to be there, but I’m excited for football and the possibility to go far in the playoffs.”

Webb is pretty confident about both basketball and football this year.

“There is a possibility for me to make varsity. Who knows what God’s plan is for me, but I’ll be OK either way,” he said. “As far as football, we have to take it one game at a time. I’ll speak this into existence: We will get to state.”

The Pirates play Hazelwood East on Friday at 7 p.m. at Pattonville in the District football championship game.
