Students visit History Museum to look at exhibit for inspiration

Assistant Principal Mr. Gene Grimshaw along with teacher Ms. Kara White and guidance counselor Ms. Alysia Patterson planned an educational field trip for students to the St. Louis Missouri History Museum. The students visited the civil rights exhibits that focused on historical moments that happened in St. Louis and the civil rights era.

Senior Alana Williams was one of many students invited to attend this trip.

“I feel like this trip was important because we got to see every aspect of civil rights and what changed for African Americans to get freedom here in America.”

Senior Sierra Jones felt that the trip was very personal for her.

“I personally enjoyed the field trip. I learned about court cases that happened right where I was born that I had no idea about,” she said. “This was one of my favorite field trips and it was really educational for all of us.”

Chaperone and guidance counselor Ms. Alysia Patterson help coordinate this trip.

“In response to some of the racial tension happening in the building and some of the plans to bring our community together, one of the ideas was a living museum,” Patterson said.

The staff thought it would be helpful to go and see what a living museum looks like.

“We wanted them to see those types of exhibits and what periods of time are covered, and the history museum happened to have an exhibit on civil rights in St. Louis,” Patterson said.

Students will be planning a living museum that will take place during Black History Month. Students are welcomed to help plan for this event and can contact Ms. Alysia Patterson in the guidance office for upcoming updates.
