Spring sports canceled on first day of spring

Spring sports canceled on first day of spring

On the first day of spring, JV Boys Tennis, Varsity Baseball, JV Baseball, Varsity Boys Tennis and JV Girls Lacrosse were all canceled because of cold temperatures.

According to lacrosse coach Megan Hernke, Mehlville made the call to cancel the game “because it was below 30 degrees and they didn’t want sticks to get so cold and break and they didn’t want anyone to get hurt.”

But if the game was to be held, another challenge would have been faced for the first-ever girls lacrosse team. The lines currently painted on the field by Grace Church, where the girls practice and play, are the dimensions for a men’s lacrosse game, not women. Hernke said someone is currently fixing the lines but why the right dimensions weren’t done the first time she does not know.

The new stadium was not painted for lacrosse during the football season because she assumes they didn’t want the lines on the field during the fall sports season. But there hasn’t been time for preparations for spring sports since then.

“They didn’t paint the turf for us because it has to be a certain temperature before you can paint it,” Hernke said “And it’s been a cold winter and it hasn’t really been warm yet for that to be done.”
