Every kid looks up to someone. In Mr. Juenger’s case, his role model was the St. Louis Cardinals pitching legend Bob Gibson.

Juenger said that Gibson was appealing to him as a kid strictly because of his fame and great skill on the mound. Juenger also said he was attracted to Gibson because of his competitiveness. Today, he still looks up to Gibson, but for a different reason.

“It was a tough time to be black,” Juenger said.

It was hard to gain fame and acceptance as an African-American and Gibson did just that throughout his career. But Juenger said athletes now are harder for kids to look up to because they don’t promote good values.

Juenger now says he is “soured on sports…it is so much different” and that it has become “more of a business than a game.”

His current role model is his priest, Father Elliot because he is so outspoken to his audience and tells the members of the church whatever is on his mind.

Juenger said he thinks his children should look up to Toby Keith, though.

He said that Keith is a good role model for kids and all people in general because he supports the troops. Juenger said the country music culture in general is a good area to have role models in because of their responsible actions and attitudes.

On the sports side of role models today, Juenger said Tim Tebow is a good role model for kids and all young adults.

He said he “loves what Tim Tebow is doing for being so positive and having a good impact on the football community.” He added that nowadays sports are in “just a different era.”

He explained that it is because back then sports fans didn’t have the common problems in with sports as they do today, such as the steroids and non-sport related trouble the players occasionally get into with the law. Kids today need someone great to look up too, instead they have to settle for irresponsible people in Hollywood and sports areas.
