Forensics students get a glass shattering experience

Students got credit in Ms. Danel Pals’ Forensics class for breaking things.

Students got to smash glass with hammers, and although it seems like that would be just for fun, there’s a scientific purpose to this explosive experiment.

“By smashing glass, you are able to tell the exit and entry point of the impact, so if at a crime there are broken windows, you can determine where the damage came form and what order it happened in,” senior Jordyn Nagelvoort said.

The experiment consists of students hitting a window-like glass with hammers in plastic bags in three different places and recognize the contact points.

Forensics does other interesting experiments such as getting maggots off of decomposing chickens, and observing different types of sand, seeds and pollen.

“Forensics is a great experience,” Nagelvoort said. “I took it because it can help with my future career, and I heard from past students how fun it could be, and it’s a great teacher.”
