A group of Pattonville students recently won the Griffin Hackathon that was put on by Fontbonne University and the St. Louis Area Food Bank. Pattonville had two teams of students that attended, and one of the groups got first place.

The winning group included Olivia Wedig, Kevin Bowers, Micah Thompkins and Mustapha Barrie.

Many schools across the St. Louis region all game together to compete in a contest to help the local Food Bank. Fontbonne and the Food Bank collaborated to have students work out the technological issues that the Food Bank was having.

“The Food Bank gave us a presentation and told us the issues they had,” senior Micah Thompkins said, “and told us to create an app to fix them.”

The students had to create an app that would help solve some of the issues it faced such as setting up donations, volunteers, and having a way to give the food out. The app that the Pattonville students created has several tabs to help. After six hours of prototyping, the students presented their prototype to a panel of judges.

Wedig said they created an app that had several functions.

“We had a home screen that has social media and information about the Food Bank, there was a ‘Give’ tab where you can donate food, sign up to volunteer, sign up to give people rides to the Food Bank, and translate for those who do not speak English.”

Not only did they have a way to help people receive rides, but there is also a feature that shows on a map where near food pantries are, along with people who can provide rides to them.

Bowers also said by using the app, you can see if you are living in a food desert.

“A food desert is when there is not a full grocery store that has healthy and affordable food within a 10 mile radius of your home.”

In St. Louis, there are approximately 13 neighborhoods that are in a food desert and 17.5 percent of St. Louis citizens have food insecurity. The goal of making this app was to help the Food Bank get food to those who cannot.
