JV soccer wins over Hazelwood West

The boys’ JV soccer team got their revenge.

After blowing a three goal lead and losing to Hazelwood West 5-3 on Thursday, Sept. 7, the Pirates bounced back and got a win against the Wildcats on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The Pirates played the Wildcats for the second time this season and got the win this time in a 2-0 shutout. Goals were scored by sophomores Gavin Alicea (No. 5) and Kevin Estrada (No. 8).

“Well, over the past few games, we learned from our mistakes, including the first match against Hazelwood West,” sophomore captain Gabe Furr said. “We knew instantly that we should beat them 10 out of 10 times that we play them, and we knew what we had to change and improve. As a whole team, we have gained more chemistry and learned how everyone plays. We used our mistakes to only make us play better and stronger.”

The first goal was a penalty kick by Gavin Alicea.

“I’ve been in the situation many times and I knew what the outcome was going to be,” Alicea said. “I was just glad to have the opportunity to take it and help the team out.”

The second goal scored by Kevin Estrada was assisted by sophomore Imran Alvi from a free kick that Estrada headed into the back of the net.

The Pirates next play at home against the Kirkwood Pioneers on Wednesday Oct. 18, at 4:15 p.m. Come support the Pirates at their last home game of the soccer season.
