Parents describe the Summit game as nothing less than riveting.

“With iffy calls from the referees, heckling from the opposing parents, and defiance from the Summit girls leaving them with two yellow cards in the last few minutes, I’d say this game was pretty wild,” said Deirdre Rodgers, a parent of the Pattonville starting goalie.

Rockwood Summit (2-3) has always been a difficult opponent for Pattonville in previous years. Last year, Summit was the only obstacle keeping Pattonville lacrosse from making it to the second round of the state tournament. This year, the girls were able to show Summit that this time it wouldn’t be as easy.

“It was definitely exciting beating such a good team like Rockwood Summit,” senior goalie Alexandria Taylor said. “Out of all my four years, I believe this team contends more than the others and has a chance of making it very far in the state tournament.”

Throughout the game, scorers like Leslie Azwell (3, including the game-winner), Victoria Lofland (2), and Bianca Johnson (2), allowed the Pirates to be tied 6-6 at the end of the regulation.

In overtime, which is sudden death in lacrosse (first goal wins), goalie Alexandria Taylor made a key save in allowing Leslie Azwell to get the ball back down the field and score the winning goal.

“The defense is what kept us strong, low (crease) defender Kortney Fauntleroy said. “I and some other players were able to step up and play strong defense and keep the shot attempts down by Summit.”
