Trick or treaters will come up to doorsteps with the hope of candy on Halloween, but preschoolers enrolled in the daycare at Pattonville High School got to practice the tradition in the hallways on Tuesday.
Pattonville playschool students and their high school student partners went around to different spots in the building including the SRO office, library, cafeteria and to individual teacher classrooms in hopes to collect candy and toys for the little ones on Oct. 27.
“It’s fun for everyone involved because it’s a chance for those around the building to see the students interact with the little kids,” teacher Ms. Twila Harris said. “It’s really kinda neat.”
Last year’s event was a grander experience with more stops around the school, but it was scaled back this time for the sake of the kids.
“We’ve been doing this for about 10 years now,” Harris said. “Last year it got to the point where the kids were so worn out that they didn’t want to get any more candy, and when a little kid doesn’t want candy, they must be really tired.”
With fewer classrooms to visit, the kids got to spend more time in the playschool classroom which was decorated with a fall theme instead of filled with traditional Halloween decorations. Harris took a different approach this year when handling the room.
“We really tried to make it more of a fall festival,” Harris said. “We didn’t want it to be scary, but fun for the kids, and I think it worked well.”
