Applications for the Spanish National Honors Society are due on Sept. 6, but the organization is more than just about learning the foreign language.
“We do things like serve dinner at the Ronald McDonald house and help out at homeless shelters,” senior Abigail Schrumpf said. “We even went to a salsa dancing class.”
Requirements to get into the society are a recommendation from a Spanish teacher, a minimum of a 3.3 weighted GPA, must never have an F in any class, and must show good marks in behavior and effort. Students must also write an essay answering specific questions related to the society.
“This chapter is all about community service,” sponsor and teacher Dr. Silvia Hilker said. “But this isn’t just a club, so when students fill out the application, we ask them how they would benefit from being involved with us.”
The application deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 6. Applications are available in Dr. Hilker’s (H110) or Ms. DeLong’s (H111) classrooms. They will also be available to answer any questions about the application or about the society.
“I hope a lot of people will join,” Hilker said. “This society is very serious and strict on rules, but we really do have a lot of fun during the year.”
