Varsity soccer loses Sectional game in overtime

There’s nothing scarier than Halloween.

But on Oct. 31, when the Pirates were playing Francis Howell Central in the Class 4 sectional game, there was nothing scarier than sudden death.

With 6 minutes, 25 minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Francis Howell Central midfielder Joey Mueller knocked in the game-winning goal to beat Pattonville 3-2.

It was a game that Howell Central controlled early on. Leading already 1-0, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick that Pattonville goalie Taylor Womack guessed wrong on and the Pirates were down 2-0 with about 28 minutes to play.

With 20 minutes remaining, senior Eric Barcenas scored a goal with an assist by Alexander Perez. Then with less than 5 minutes left, Daniel Ndungu scored on an empty net when the Central goalie wandered too far away from the goal and left a wide open shot available.

Pattonville (10-12-3) went into the game after winning back-to-back District championships, but were knocked out of the state tournament with the loss.
