Pattonville stuns Hazelwood East in home thriller
January 9, 2019
The Spartans blew out the Pirates 75-39 in the first game of the season at the Vianney Invitational Tournament. The Pirates knowing they needed this win in front of a home crowd came back from being down at the half 41-32 to win the game 70-68. Pattonville improved to a 4-9 record on the season.
“We did a great job handling the pressure,” head coach Kelly Thames said. “We didn’t have many turnovers and we were able to keep them off of the line. It’s what we’ve been working on all season from the very first game when we played against them.”
The Pirates were led by sophomore guard Alijah Carter who scored a team-high 20 points in just his fifth game of the season and is the second player for the Pirates to score 20 in a game this season.
Julius Erby put in work scoring 16 points and collecting 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Monte Henderson scored 12 points being very aggressive in the 3rd and 4th quarter when his team needed him. Henderson was able to get to the line a total of nine times and hit five free throws in the final stretch of the game pushing Pattonville to the win.
Hazelwood East really showed their talent dominating the Pirates in the first half and nearly winning the game behind Marcus Lane’s 22 points. He was not alone with two of his teammates, Javon Fultz and Terry Lowe, scoring 16 each.
The Spartans just fell apart after halftime only scoring 27 points compared to Pattonville’s 38 in the second half.
The Spartans were able to cut the lead down to only 2 and missed a last second 3-point attempt that could’ve won them the game but it fell short.
