Girls’ varsity basketball crumbles against Hazelwood West at home
January 10, 2019
Starting the 4th quarter, Pattonville led Hazelwood West by 6 points, but the Wildcats clawed back to defeat the girls’ varsity basketball team 66-64 on January 9.
Pattonville (7-6) has lost three in a row after starting the season 5-0.
The Pirate girls led the entire game – including a 33-30 lead at halftime – until they were outscored 23-15 in the 4th quarter.
“We played hard, but we didn’t execute some things,” head coach Doug McGhee said. “We will use this loss as an learning experience for the next game.”
The girls’ leading scorer was Niya Danfort who had 23 points in the game. Alongside Danfort, Pattonville’s main scorers were Jaliya Smith with 13 points and Kelsey Mack with 11 points.
Brooke Jenkins struggled from the floor in the game only scoring 3 points. That accounts for just her second lowest scoring game of the season. She made only one field goal and shot 25 percent from the free throw line making 1-of-4.
The Wildcats were down at the half, but battled back in the 4th quarter to win the game by 2 points. Their leading scorer was junior guard Mykel Matthews with 31 points.
Late in the 4th quarter, it appeared that she injured her leg on a lay-up attempt. She hobbled to the other side of the court and appeared to stretch it out before attempting a free throw. She remained in the game, but she did not have the same energy and was noticeably limping.
Hazelwood West’s center Dony’a Blackson scored 15 points and collected 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Mikalyn Burrus clocked in 14 points for her 6th double-digit performance this season.
