Since September 11, 2003, hundreds of people have been participating in the annual March to the Arch, a 21-mile walk to honor those Americans who died in the September 11 terrorism attacks.
The march was founded by Bo Drochelman, a man who felt he needed to do something to honor those who died in the attack.
Beginning in Chesterfield and ending at the north leg of the Gateway Arch, the march covers a full 21 miles. At the entrance to the Arch grounds, participants are escorted by the color guard to the leg of the Arch, where the Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America, and America the Beautiful are sung.
Austin Ratanasitee, who has been participating in the march since 2010, said he marches “to remember those that lost their lives during the attacks. I feel that since they gave their lives up just for being an American, I should have to give something too.”
A few stops and breaks along the route include Mari de Villa Retirement Center, the History Museum in Forest Park, and SLU campus.
March to the Arch T-shirts are given out at the beginning of the route, and snacks and drinks are provided for participants along the way.
All are encouraged to bring their American flag and join the March to the Arch next year.
