As a senior in high school, I’ve considered my options for what to do after graduation. Sometimes the traditional 2-year or 4-year university path isn’t for everyone. Luckily, there are many post-secondary options for everyone that are highlighted here at PHS.
Many trade schools, such as Ranken, American Trade School, State Technical College of Missouri, and North Tech, offer programs for plumbing, electrical, and HVAC careers. They engage in a lot of hands-on work, and programs typically last for at least nine months! These trade schools are highly recommended and are an excellent option if a 4-year isn’t what you’re looking for.
There are various options for internships, some of which are paid, providing hands-on experience, such as through the management internships. When I worked at Menards, there were MIT, Managers In Training. This is where employees shadowed other managers and sales team managers while still being paid. Another internship I personally experienced was with the BESt Healthcare Institute. I completed this internship during the summer of 2024, and it was one of the BEST learning experiences I have ever had. While doing this internship, I was able to stay on Washington University’s campus and sleep in the dorms from Monday to Thursday. This internship gave me a huge first look at what life in the dorms would be and opened my eyes to many more options I didn’t know I had. I was able to visit many hospitals and get lots of hands-on experience, such as suturing skin, practicing how to insert an IV, and giving someone a shot. At the end of the internship, a graduation was held, and each participant got $500. A big plus is that my dorm buddy is now my best friend. I loved the overall experience!
As graduation approaches, I realize how quickly things can change. It’s important to maintain an open mindset and approach everything with a clear head. At times, we get anxious over things, and that may be for what’s to come. But don’t forget about the possibilities for what’s about to happen! Best of luck in these final weeks, seniors!
