In Ms. Hunter’s Graphic Novels As Literature course, students will read and analyze a variety of graphic texts through a literary lens. The curriculum consists of examining pieces of literature and interpreting them by creating artwork shown in the photo gallery.
Students, mainly juniors and seniors, use all types of art mediums to create their work, like computers, pencils and paper, paint, or iPads. The students are open to create with whatever they want to use. “This class has given me a newfound appreciation for graphic novels and literature as a whole. I find that now that I know what tools that graphic novel makers use to make stories makes me appreciate them more” said senior, Jasyn Brown.
One of the assignments the students create are collaborative pieces. Students had one minute each to draw details into shapes, then pass them to their peers to add more. At the end, they retrieved the papers they started with and added a caption to match their creatures. “It was interesting to see how other people interpret my words and made it their own. Sometimes it is rather annoying as they misconstrue the prompt, but it is entertaining nevertheless,” senior, Kaylee Mansker said.
The course can be taken as an English elective and would be perfect for students interested in learning more about the elements of graphic novels and expanding their artistic skills.
