PHS organization Renaissance is preparing to host another event, the Most Valuable Pirate Awards. More commonly known as MVP, the 12th annual event takes place on April 18 at 1:30 p.m in the auditorium.
According to English teacher and head of Renaissance, Mrs. Beth Moritz, MVP is a ceremony where each staff member chooses a student to honor, and there are no criteria for winning an award.
“Students are able to receive awards for whatever the staff members chooses, and that could be good character, improvement, overcoming obstacles, academics, positive attitude, passion, anything,” Moritz said.
At the event, students, parents, and staff attend, and everyone dresses up. Students walk across the stage, meet the staff member that nominated them halfway, and receive a medal that they can wear at graduation. Afterwards, there is a reception in the library. Many students have been nominated for multiple awards throughout their high school experience.
Moritz also said, “Many staff members love [this event] because it gives us a chance to recognize students for their hard work. Staff members like Mr. Richter also contribute a lot.”
