Most understand the pressure an athlete feels when he or she is making a huge play. They feel nervous because everyone is counting on them. But what about when a choir student, that is so used to singing with other people, has to go up and sing all by their self?
Amy Azwell, a 10th grader in treble choir, has a big solo coming up at the next choir concert, now scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. The concert was canceled on its original date of Thursday, Dec. 5, due to the inclement weather.
She will be singing John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, Movement 5.
Soloists are under a great deal of pressure and often they get nervous.
Azwell is no different.
“I am pretty nervous. The part I’m singing is with parts I’ve only heard once, because the people aren’t in my class.”
In just one rehearsal, she has to learn to listen to the others singing and tune to them.
In order for the performance to be at its best, soloists have to practice a lot.
“It’s hard to memorize the words because the phrases all start out the same, and the rhythms are different, “ Azwell explains.
But Azwell isn’t worried, she practices as much as she can and she knows the more she practices the better the performance will be.
