The Madness Has Arrived

March is much more than just another month for college basketball teams along with college basketball fans. For teams on the dreaded “bubble”, it’s make or break time. Some teams’ bubble will burst along with its dreams and chances of making the “big dance”, but for some teams the dream continues into the NCAA Tournament.

Those bubbles bursted and those dreams got bigger on Sunday, March 16 – also known as Selection Sunday.

Perhaps the biggest story heading into the tournament is the 34-0 Wichita State Shockers who have the first undefeated regular season record heading into the tournament since the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels in 1991. The Shockers do have the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region, but the No. 1 overall seed goes to the 32-2 Florida Gators who went undefeated in the SEC (18-0) and won their last 26 games.

Our city’s own Saint Louis University Billikens picked up a No. 5 seed in the tournament, but they could have gotten an even higher seed if they didn’t lose four of their last five games. The Billikens started out 25-2 overall, 12-0 in the Atlantic 10 and rode a 19-game winning streak until they got upset by the Duquesne Dukes which started their late season slide.

For Mizzou fans, the Tigers didn’t make the tournament even with with a 22-11 overall record and a 9-9 SEC record. The Tigers are considered to be one of the biggest tournament snubs, as they dropped to a No. 2 seed in the NIT.

So for whatever team you might be cheering for and want to see take home the trophy when the championship game is played in Arlington, Texas (or if you just want to see the drama unfold),  just keep one thing in mind: It’s not called March Madness for nothing.
