Pattonville’s golden team stepped onto the field to begin their spring season. Pattonville Varsity Soccer (PVS) won first place against St. Charles West in the final round at a tournament hosted by Fort Zumwalt East.
“Coming out and winning the tournament felt great and was a good way to start off the season,”mid-fielder Erin Collier said.
On March 28, PVS played Parkway South, a team that is a very competitive opponent. “This win was just a great way to start the season. That one, and the tournament gave us a confidence boost,” defensemen Katie Mertz said.
The girls started the season off with a couple wins, but they did without one of their starters, Sammie Bauer.
“It sucked missing the tournament but at the same time I’m just happy they were able to pull through without me,” Bauer said. Bauer plays wing.
“It was tough because there weren’t enough subs on the bench. We just need all of our players to stay refreshed. But the good thing is that she’ll be returning,” Mikala McGhee, 12, said.
Before the season began, PVS filled out goal sheets. The girls vowed to excel as a whole both on and off the field. Saying the girls are concentrated both in and out of soccer is an understatement.
“Soccer is life to all of us. We just always have fun. Without fun there is no point in playing the sport. Before every game we laugh around and sing but once we step across the line it is all business and its game time,” Collier said.
For preseason rankings in Large Schools, PVS was ranked No. 6 but after winning the Fort Zumwalt East Tournament PVS moved up to No. 5 as of March 26.
Team goals with Kimberly Hulse
Going undefeated- Regular season, and post-season. We’re just going to take it all.
Stronger defense- If our defense is strong, then no one can score on us and that gives our offense good confidence on the upper half of the field.
Win the Iowa Showcase- We compete in it every year, and we always come close to winning it.
Conference Champions-We want to go for the second year in a row winning conference.
District Champions-If we win again this year it would be the fourth year in a row that we win districts.
State Champions- A main goal for our team this year is to go all the way and take the title of Class 3 Champions unlike any other Pattonville Girl’s Soccer team before.
