English department promotes #WhyIWrite

Since 2009, Oct. 20 has been the National Day on Writing. Thousands of people nationwide share their reason for writing using #WhyIWrite on Twitter.

The National Day on Writing was founded by the National Council of Teachers of English, where teachers in English, language arts, and writing studies can come together to form one voice.

NCTE says writing needs greater attention and celebration, and no matter who you are, writing is a part of your life.

National Day on Writing was introduced into Pattonville for the first time by public speaking teacher Mr. Ken Lopinot.

“Writing is important because it can last forever and we can go back and change it,” Lopinot said. “Even though I was a better speaker, I liked writing as a kid.”

English students of all grades posted their reasons for why they write outside of the Writing Center, room D101.

Staff and students were also invited to write a 2-sentence horror story or a 6-word memoir.
