Boys’ basketball takes huge loss against Hazelwood East in Vianney Invitational Tournament
The Pattonville boys’ varsity basketball team lost to Hazelwood East 75-39 in the opening game of the 52nd Annual Jerry Boeckman Memorial Invitational Tournament at Vianney High School.
The Pirates (0-1) were outscored 53-16 in the first half of the game, but head coach Kelly Thames said he is not worried about the team’s ability this year.
“We have a very young team at the moment with a freshman as our leading scorer,” he said. “It’s the first game of the season and obviously we have some things to work on.”
Freshman guard (and the head coach’s son) Kellen Thames scored the game-high for Pattonville with 10 points shooting 3-for-7 from the field and 1-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The Pirates only had two seniors show up on the stats sheet in this game. Guard Andre Webb contributed 7 points and guard Cory Stringer contributed 3 points.
Pattonville managed to outscore Hazelwood East 22-17 in the 3rd quarter, but the lead was too much to overcome.
The Spartans were led by a trio of seniors scoring in double figures pushing them to the 75-39 win. Jakah Shepherd who plays the guard position scored the total game-high with 12 points shooting 3-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc.
The Pirates will play Vianney (0-1) tonight at 6 p.m. The game will be live streamed on Griffins TV.
