Renowned “Super Mario Bros.” Game Makes its Debute in the Theaters

The buzz around the new “Super Mario Bros.” movie was high, as many fans gathered at the movies to watch this awaited film on opening weekend. This fan favorite made its debut on the big screen on April 5, 2023.
The first Super Mario Bros game came out in 1985 on the Nintendo Entertainment System but was based upon the arcade game which was released even earlier. The game sold more than 40 million copies, which demonstrates how large of a following this game has gathered.
Whether or not you are one of the 40 million who played the game, you know the logo of the infamous Mario and Luigi.
This hour and thirty-five-minute film covers the plot of the first Super Mario Bros game, allowing fans to see their favorite gaming characters come to life.
In the game, players can play as Mario or Luigi as they tackle trying to rescue Princess Toadstool from the evil King Bowser.
The movie follows a similar plot, with Mario and Luigi introduced as just two Italian plumbers trying to make it in the big city. They stumble down some pipes and are transported to another universe. In this universe, Mario comes across Toad, a Mushroom Kingdom resident who aspires to go on his first real adventure. In an attempt to find Luigi, Mario follows Toad to meet the Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach.
We see firsthand the love spark between Mario and Princess Peach. In order to beat King Bowser, Princess Peach and Mario must get the help of the Great Kong Army, but Mario must prove his strength through an obstacle course, similar to the layout of the Super Mario Bros game.
After Mario proves himself, he and Princess Peach head to talk to Cranky Kong about getting his army, and Toad tags along. Upon arrival, Princess Peach and Mario realize the only way that they will get the army is if Mario wins in a fight against Donkey Kong.
As the epic fight begins, Donkey Kong seems to have a win over Mario, when Mario makes an iconic, funny comeback and wins the fight and the army.
As Bowser gains jealousy for Mario, he ambushes the army and captures Princess Peach’s weakness, Toad. In an effort to save her friend, Princess Peach gives herself up to marry Bowser.
At the wedding, when all hope is lost, Princess Peach uses a power-up and freezes Bowser to buy just enough time for Mario to come in and rescue his brother Luigi and Princess Peach with the help of Donkey Kong.

For example, in the end, Mario made his dad proud when Mario and Luigi ended up saving the city just in a different way than expected. The producers of the movie did their best to stay true to the original plot of the game, in an effort to give fans an animated play-by-play of the game they’ve played.
This movie has a bit for everyone, from the humor, to the fight scenes, to a little bit of love interest. The Super Mario Bros Movie will stay in theaters throughout the spring and early summer.
