Almost everyone in our beloved city of St. Louis is a Cardinals fan. That is a simple known fact. How can you not be a fan in a city nicknamed Baseball Heaven?
When the Cardinals came from 10½ games back to make the playoffs, the city went crazy. What happened with the fans of St. Louis in October 2011 was not jumping on the bandwagon, just fans being fans. What is happening now with the Blues, however, is simply a city hopping on the bandwagon.
I personally have been a Blues fan since the lockout of the 04-05 season, and a faithful one at that. Yes I expressed my frustrations when the Blues were losing, but it was out of love.
Now that they are winning, there are more Blues “fans” than I have ever seen. People claim to be fans when in reality they don’t even know what icing is. Neither do they know the names of the players on our 4th line. Sometimes the only player these “fans” know is T.J. Oshie.
Oshie is a good player and all that but if you actually knew hockey you would find out that Oshie is nothing spectacular. In fact, the Blues don’t really have anyone near the top of the hockey food chain. They do have a plethora of good players, just not great ones. But that is a story for a different day.
If you want to be a fan, then I would gladly accept you into the Blues fan community. All I ask is that you learn about the team and stick with them through thick and thin. Saying you love the Blues and your favorite player is Oshie the year they are actually winning is not being a fan. That is jumping on the bandwagon. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it doesn’t make you cool. It just annoys those of us that are true fans.
