Transitioning into college from high school can be very stressful, yet very exciting. A recent survey was given to Madi King, a former Pattonville High School student. She graduated in the Class of 2012 and is currently in her freshman year at the University of Notre Dame. The survey is a comparison of her experiences at Pattonville and her current college. Here are 5 questions that are helpful for students to recognize the differences between the two 4-year school programs.
1. What college are you attending?
Madi King: University of Notre Dame
2. What are some major differences about attending a university and your time at Pattonville?
MK: Once you go off to college, you immediately begin to grow. You are constantly challenged and encouraged to find out who you are as a person. In high school, I think teachers try to teach facts or general theories. College teaches you wisdom.
3. How is the homework load different from Pattonville?
MK: At my school, we never have busy work. If you are writing a paper, it will serve as a new foundation for a company’s presentation. If you are taking a science class, it might serve as additional research for a professor.
4. Are there any differences from being in a college band, rather than PHS band?
MK: College band is much more relaxed in terms of technical skill. It is about creating an entertaining show, not winning a competition. We also get to travel a lot more. (Pictured above is King at the BCS National Championship Game that matched Notre Dame against Alabama.)
5. Is there anyone or anything you miss from Pattonville?
MK: I miss the familiarity of high school. I miss being able to sleep!
