The Contagious Case of Senioritis

IMG_2682

We have all heard of the infectious problem that high school seniors face. The situation that leads to laziness, lack of effort and care, and exhaustion. This dilemma that causes normally alert students to fall asleep in class, or seniors who had a 95 percent attendance rate turn to 75 percent. It is called senioritis. But is this well-known condition a myth or is it true? According to Pattonville seniors it is very real.

Senior Alexis Rucker takes two weighted courses, is involved with the health occupations program here at Pattonville, and works part-time at McDonald’s and said that senioritis does not affect her work in school, but has a large impact on doing her homework. She already knows what school she is attending and has her scholarships in place so she believes she can relax.

Rucker’s advice to future seniors who may give in to senioritis is to “know what school you’re going to attend or what you want to do after school early, so you won’t have to stress in the end.”

Another senior, Janelle Bryant, who is involved with many activities at PHS, also works part-time at McDonald’s, and has not yet decided which college she would like to attend, said that senioritis just snuck up on her. She heard of the horrors of it, but never believed she could become so tired of school.

Bryant said, “I’ve always enjoyed school, but now I dread it every day.” Her advice to incoming seniors is senioritis is unavoidable. “So you have to keep your future in mind, maintain good attendance, and meet deadlines!”

According to The Huffington Post’s 7 Tips to Help You Fight Senioritis, the author encourages seniors by telling them:

  1. Keep in mind these often-overlooked possibilities: Don’t slack too much because it could ruin all that your hard work.
  2. Remember: you’ve got less than six months left: You have worked too hard to give up now. You can see the end of the finish line now.
  3. Consider your parents: The least you can do to thank your parents, who will spend tons of money on your education, is work to the best of your ability.
  4. This is your chance to become a better you: Start finding things that will interest you and start to find out what you’ll what to do for the rest of your life.
  5. Keep a daily– or at least weekly– checklist: Stay organized with homework, chores!
  6. Sleep!: Take advantage of being able to sleep on time!
  7. Get vaccinated: Try to stay involved with school so you’ll have more motivation!

Remember seniors, this is the beginning of the end of this chapter of your life and get ready to start the next one!
