Have you ever wondered who designs a highway or racetrack?
One of the best in the world is Mr. William (Bill) Moss. He designed highway I-64, a racetrack in England and one in Tokyo, Japan.
Moss, an Alabama native, is a member of the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.
He was born into a family of engineers, and he did get into racing a little bit on racetracks but he said, “I didn’t have a death wish,” and said he was sent to Japan and was hired to go to England.
Various tracks that Moss has designed are the Las Vegas Speedway, Kentucky Speedway and Talladega Super Speedway.
Interesting fact: Some scenes from the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby were shot at Talladega Super Speedway.
He has written a book, but as long as he is alive, he will never release it.
“If I publish it, then I won’t have a job.”
As far as highways go, he has done highways I-64, I-20, I-65, and I-459.
“There is no university in the world that teaches anyone in the world how to design a highway that people drive over 70 miles per hour speed.”
