Students and faculty members of Pattonville High School will be participating in the Polar Plunge on Feb. 27. The Polar Plunge is an event that takes place all over the country, designed to raise money for the Special Olympics.

“The way it works is you and anyone else makes a team. Most of the time, your team has a theme and you raise money and then you run into freezing water such as Creve Coeur Lake,” sophomore Emma Hohenstein said.

Hohenstein has participated in the Polar Plunge for the past four years and is going to continue to participate this year.

So far, every time Hohenstein has joined in the event, the ice has had to be broken apart so that everyone could run into the water. Hohenstein said that it’s worth it though, because the money raised goes toward an athletic program that allows children with disabilities to play sports.

The entire school is able to get involved even if they don’t want to take a swim in freezing lake water.

This year, Student Council is holding a penny war to decide which of the four faculty members will be participating in the event this year.

These faculty members consist of School Resource Officer Storer and assistant principals Mr. Bob Thompson, Ms. Cara Hiripitiyage, and Mr. Jon Fitzgerald.

“These individuals were nice enough to volunteer themselves to be freezing for a reason,” student council member Maddi Gamache said.

Of these possible plungers, Gamache believes that Thompson will win and have to plunge with the school.

After lunches on the first day, Thursday Feb. 18, it appears that Storer and Thompson are leading with the most money. However, all of the buckets had money in them.

There is plenty of time to donate money at lunch for who you want to see taking the plunge. The donating ends on Friday, Feb. 26.
