Laptops to be wiped clean this summer

The essays, notes, projects, music, and pictures have all piled up on student’s laptops over the past two years, and by the end of next week, students will need to find a way to back all of this up.

“We are going to re-image and put a fresh operating system on all of the laptops,” iLearn staff Travis Harder said. This process will require every laptop to be wiped clean of all its data.

While each PHS student will get the same laptop back in the fall as they have right now, there will be nothing on it.

“This allows students to start from scratch and get rid of junk that has built up in their hard drive,” Harder said.

Mr. Jamie Richter, also a member of the iLearn staff, recently sent out a video to all PHS staff regarding the easiest ways to back up the MacBook Airs.

One method involves students uploading all of their documents to OwnCloud where they can use their Moodle sign-in information to back-up all their information.

It is important for students and staff to review this before school gets out, because all laptops are due during 7th hour finals on Monday, June 2.

“Students should understand that this year will be different than in the past. Anything that they wish to save from their laptops needs to be backed-up before we update all of the machines.”

If any students have questions about backing up their data, ask a staff member or visit the iLearn center. You can also review the Prezi created by Richter below that show different ways to protect your data:
