Senior Marquis Hayes Jr. is one of the top offensive lineman in the country and is committed to the University of Oklahoma, but before playing football in college, he has the opportunity to play for the United States in the 2017 North American Championship game in Orlando, Florida, on Jan. 28.
The U-19 game pits the best high school players from the U.S. and Canada against each other for the annual championship.
“They choose the best players from all over the country,” Hayes said, “so it really is an honor to be chosen out of all the players in America.”
Other than the game, the week leading up to it is full of activities and practice.
“We work out every day, and we get lots of free time to bond with other players and hang out,” Hayes said. “They also take us out to do fun things like eat and bowling.”
Hayes was chosen to participate back in December 2016 and announced his invitation on Twitter.
“I’m excited to be able to not only represent my family and my country down in Florida, but also my school,” Hayes said.
The game will take place on the day before the Pro Bowl (which is also in Orlando), but the players for the championship game will not attend.
“Even though we won’t be attending the Pro Bowl, we are going to be meeting with players and watching them practice,” Hayes said. “The whole weekend is going to be a cool event.”
