Transitioning from teacher to principal

Transitions are happening all around Pattonville High School this year. New students. New buildings. New computers. However there are even bigger transitions going on. Two history teachers moving to an assistant principal positions. Mr. Gene Grimshaw is one of those teachers turned principal.

Q1: How long have you wanted to be principal?

A1: Well, my dad and grandpa were principals, so I thought it was right for me.

Q2: What is your role as principal?

A2: I work with students with the last name Roc-Z. I also have the discipline side as well. I work with the science department and help support their needs. I also help obtain materials needed. I am also involved in the modern language department.  I oversee the inside of the building and work with the custodians. I am also in charge of the parking lot including Grace Church and the lockers.

Q3: Were you ever worried you wouldn’t get the job.

A3: Well, there is always doubt going on; but I got to work with Mr. West for some on the job training. So, I had some confidence going in.

Q4: Do you miss teaching?

A4: Certainly. I enjoyed the constant interaction with the students. I still interact with the students, just on a larger scale.

Q5: How are you transitioning?

A5: Well, it is only four days in. I’m observing Dr. Dobrinic and others. Dr. Dobrinic has been really supportive, as well as Ms. [Pam] Otto (secretary).
