With today being the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th, 2001, many teachers and students are reflecting on that tragic day. Emily Gilmer, a senior at Pattonville, recalls how she felt.
How old were you when 9/11 happened?
“I was in first grade.”
Where were you when you first heard about the event or saw it on TV?
“After lunch when we were going back to class, an announcement was made telling the teachers to turn their TVs off for the rest of the day. I remember seeing a little of it on TV before they turned it off. My teacher had us play on the computers for the rest of the day.”
What thoughts did you have? Did it make you afraid in any way?
“I feel like I was kind of oblivious to it because of how young I was, so it didn’t really scare me too much because I didn’t understand what was really going on. I think it would have impacted me more if I was older.”
How do you think 9/11 changed our country?
“I feel like we have stronger security now and are more aware of terrorism. It was the first time that terrorism really hit home.”
