Club of the Week: American Sign Language

Club+of+the+Week%3A+American+Sign+Language

This year, Pattonville is welcoming new additions to the variety of clubs for students with all kinds of interests to stay involved. One of these clubs is ASL (American Sign Language) club where students can broaden their knowledge of silent speech.

“I just heard [the meeting information] on the announcements and I thought it sounded fun,” sophomore Lexie Keller said. “I think sign language is cool because you don’t have to speak it fluently, and it’s easier to speak with your hands than with your mouth. The people in ASL are really fun, too.”

Freshman Nile Trice said, “I was interested in joining ASL because I have a friend who’s deaf and I want to be able to communicate with them in an easy, fun way.”

Trice continues, “I think signing is better because most people take Spanish or French but what if you meet a deaf person and there’s no [easy] way to communicate. Also, sign language is translated to many different [oral] languages, this is just American.”

Trice wants to add that she has been learning sign for two years and can sign all the letters of the alphabet in less than a minute.

ASL meets every Tuesday after school in Mrs. Koeing’s room.
