Pattonville was No. 6 in the Class 5 Missouri High School Football Media Poll in preseason state rankings. The Pirates were No. 9 in the STLToday.com Area Large Schools Top 10 list.

Varsity football not only had a 47-minute lightning delay in the game on Friday, but also a delayed start to a winning season. The first game of the season ended with a 30-20 loss to Vianney.

Outside linebacker and captain Isaiah Davis said Pirates’ fans can be reassured that the rest of the season will be better.

“We could have executed our plays better,” Davis said. “Vianney took advantage of the mistakes that we made which ended with us taking a loss.”

Davis isn’t discouraged by the loss though and explains that the team (0-1) is able to polish multiple aspects of the game they didn’t know needed work until now.

“We did do a few things well throughout the game. We learned how to play together because that was our first time playing with each other, but we are going to get better by watching film,” he said. “We were able to see how bad we executed our plays. We plan to just go into practice this week working hard.”

This upcoming week as the team prepares to face Mehlville, they will be working hard to perfect their plays as well as finding their opponent’s weaknesses.

“We have watched a little of Mehlville’s film and have found their better players, and we will definitely be making a game plan to stop them from running the ball.”

Even with a rough start on the new season, Davis is confident that the team will put in the hard work it takes to have a successful year.

“We are going to do great things for the rest of the season.”

The Pirates travel to Mehlville on Aug. 26 and the game will kick off at 7 p.m.
